TRI Sections red bar McLellan Receives Marian Weinbaum Fischman Memorial Lectureship Award

November 2007

TRI’s co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., has been named 2007 recipient of the Marion Weinbaum Fischman Memorial Lectureship Award.

The award is conferred annually by Columbia University in memory of Dr. Fischman, a pioneer in addiction research whose lifelong achievements included co-founder and co-director of the Division of Substance Abuse at Columbia. The award goes each year to an outstanding scientist in the addiction field.

“No award means more than this one,” McLellan said. “Marian was a friend, a colleague and a mentor. Our field is still enriched by her spirit, intellect, and unflagging dedication to the ethical use of science to understand and respond to addiction,” he added.

Dr. Fischman died in 2001 after a long and distinguished career that included groundbreaking research in cocaine and methamphetamine, creation of several research and treatment centers including the one at Columbia, and a passion for mentoring younger scientists. The award in her memory was established by her husband and colleague, Herb Kleber, Ph.D., and her children, step-children and grandchildren.

McLellan receives his award at a November 1, 2007 ceremony at Columbia University in New York City.
