TRI is one of the most active research centers in the nation on addiction and substance use issues. TRI’s portfolio, derived from sections and centers and their collaborative projects, includes research into chronic care treatment models, effective strategies for substance abusing offenders, contingency management techniques, strategies for treatment counselors, and evidence-based tools and training for parents and family members whose loved ones are drinking or taking drugs. Much of the research conducted by TRI derives from the Addiction Severity Index (ASI). The ASI is a multi-dimensional assessment instrument that revolutionized the field of addiction and substance use in the mid-1980s when it was introduced by A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D. and colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for the Studies of Addiction.
