TRI RELEASES CD WORKSHOP ON BRIEF INTERVENTION FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSING ADOLESCENTS

Six-Hour Multimedia CD Appropriate for Clinicians and School-Based Counselors Working with Mild Drug Abusing Adolescents

The Treatment Research Institute today released a multimedia CD workshop on Brief Intervention for Substance Abusing Adolescents developed by TRI Senior Scientist Ken C. Winters, Ph.D., noted expert on adolescent substance abuse. The program is a computer-delivered adaptation of the Brief Intervention (“BI”) workshop Winters developed based on research with mild drug-abusing adolescents and their parents. The BI program consists of three individual sessions – two with the adolescent and one with the parent or parents. Workshop topics include general counseling skills, with a focus on motivational enhancement strategies, and a detailed description of the model.

The instruction is intended for certified or licensed counselors – including school-and college-based counselors - who work with teenagers suspected of a drug problem, particularly teenagers with a mild or moderate form of drug involvement. Recommended use is for outpatient, individual counseling over the course of three weeks. The program is not recommended for adolescents exhibiting signs of a dependence use disorder or youth with multiple co-existing behavioral disorders.

The self-directed CD offers a basic training on a three-meeting BI model, the first two as individual sessions with adolescents, the third with the primary parent or guardian. Topics include general counseling skills with a focus on motivational enhancement strategies. The instruction is organized into an introduction and five sessions:

Introduction, Getting Started
Session 1: Habits of Highly Effective Counselors
Session 2: Brief Intervention: Background
Session 3: Brief Intervention: Basic Tools
Session 4: Components of the 3-Meeting Program
Session 5: Often Asked Questions

Total time to complete all six components is approximately six hours although the program allows self pacing throughout the material. Instructions are provided at the end of the workshop for those interested in obtaining 0.6 CEU credit.

The entire CD, including the workshop, manual, suggested scripts, worksheets, and a brief summary of drugs commonly abused by teenagers, is available for $125 from TRI. Questions? Contact Bonnie Catone at 518-753-0151 or at BCatone@tresearch.org. Click here for ordering information.
